About Mount St Helens
Mount Saint Helens is one of the most active volcanoes in the Cascade ranges, the volcano is surrounded by a range of flora and fauna, coniferous forest, meadows, alpine tundra and glaciers. The volcano is also apart of the ring of fire. Mt St Helens is seen to be one of the “young” volcanoes in the Cascade ranges (in Washington State USA). Mt St Helen’s is about 40,000 years old, the summit cone has being rising from about 2,200 years ago prior to the 1980 volcanic eruptions. The volcano can be climbed by people but they do need a permit to do so. There are also many other ways to see Mt St Helens, it is visible from different lookout points, visitors centres or helicopter tours. For majority of the year the peak of Mount St Helens is covered with snow, this is because it is at 2,459m above sea level, which means that the temperature is much lower and the precipitation is at a higher rate. The volcano is one of the most popular volcanoes to see as it created the most violent eruption in American history.
